An unexpected chapter in my life

Dear Darlings,

Some of you may know my college background, some of you may not. In school, I studied broadcast journalism, but as I got further and further into my studies, I found print journalism and fell in love with the written word in a way I never had before. I guess writing term papers in high school and college didn’t light that fire, but writing real-life stories did.

My internship further solidified my love. For six months, I worked for the newspaper at Fort Riley, Kansas. I was embedded with troops as they did training exercises. I covered changes of command and a pass-in-review. I received an award for an article I wrote about our troops coming home from the first Gulf War. I loved what I did. I got to tell real stories and make a real difference.

Fast forward to now. I see the political division. Somehow, the algorithms don’t work for my social media. I’m inundated with both sides of the political spectrum and the news. It’s made me pause and try to figure out what I need to do. Rather than going down a scary rabbit hole of divisiveness and fear, I am pulling out my long-stashed journalistic skills.

I reached out to a political influencer who has a commonsense approach and strategy to combating the deep divide threatening our country. I pitched myself to him as a writer. I told him I was good at what I do. I outlined my belief in his organization and this great nation of ours. I didn’t expect to hear back from him. He’s busy building a political platform. He has a huge following. But I did. About 20 minutes after I sent my dm to his Instagram account, I got a new message notification. From him.

I responded with a sample newsletter for him. He responded with, “I love it!”

This is what I wrote.

Headlines in the papers in 1979 and early 1980 were dire. The Iranian Hostage Crisis. Fuel shortages. Three Mile Island. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. In the midst of those headlines, though, a small bubble of hope appeared in Lake Placid, New York, during the Olympic Games. A team of 20 young men united our nation against external forces by first defeating, at the time, the Soviet Union, then winning the Gold Medal by defeating Finland, and becoming a Miracle on Ice.

As we get ready to kick off the 2026 Winter Olympics, it’s hard not see the parallel and note that our nation could use a miracle to unite us in a common goal. “We might be from different parts of the country and have different ideas, things, cultures, but the one thing we do have is that we’re Americans. And when we stick together and help each other, we can achieve great things.” Jack O’Callahan Miracle: The Boys of ‘80

This! This is where we need to be. Sticking together. Helping each other. Achieving together. This is where — comes in. This grassroots organization seeks to empower the people of the United States. — has the resources and the brilliant minds of people who passionately want to educate and empower our citizens to make this a groundswell, helping to right our Nation and put us on a path where we once again feel pride in our country and our fellow citizens. Do you believe in Miracles? The founders of — do. Join us.

He and I have been in touch many times since I sent my first message. We’ll get a Zoom call on the books where I’ll be introduced to the rest of the team, and have my role defined a little more. Now, I’ve shared how and the why all of this came to be. Once I have things more firmly in place within this movement, I’ll share the who, the what, and the where.

For now, I’ve dusted off the Journalist Creed (although my duties will most likely be confined to writing for the organization). When called upon to be a reporter of facts, I promise to live by it. I can’t wait to see where this takes me and, in turn, all of us!

What I believe most journalists lack.

xo,

me
