I told you the story of my favorite Christmas gifts I was given this past holiday. So far I have permission to share two of the letters with you (I haven’t asked the other three yet). I will share their stories with you for no other reason than to have their documentation of our lives together included here in my blog.
These will be their words, written by them.
Dear My Darling Mom,
I’ve said it time and time again, but you are the reason I am who I am today, so I think it bears repeating. You have one of the kindest hearts of anyone I have ever met; to those you love, and to those you have just met. You radiate sunshine and cheerfulness in every single way. I know you don’t see it the way I do, but all those who are blessed enough to know you as we do know how truly special we must be to have you in our lives. It’s not every day you run into someone as kindhearted and caring as you are. It’s an incredibly rare thing to have, and I know we all realize this and cherish you with our whole hearts. It may take a while for you to truly let people in, but once they’re in, they’re in for life and that is something that I have learned from you and have truly taken to heart. My people are my people, and I will protect them with everything I am. I learned this from you, and I think that is part of what makes this family, that you and Dad built, so special. You’ve taught me throughout my time on earth, and some of the highlights include but are not limited to: you don’t have to be everybody’s best friend, but you have to be kind, treat others as you would like to be treated, how to be unconditionally loved. From day one, I have been given this amazing family that we have built and grown with, into this amazing group of people that I am lucky enough to be related to by blood. We bring people together and work as a team to incorporate the new ones and make sure they know they have a place in our home always. We all learned this from you. You open your heart and our home to anyone and everyone who wanted to be part of it, and I could not be more thankful to be a part of this family we have built. I look up to you so much as a person I strive to be, and I don’t think you know how much you mean to everyone in your life. You are truly the most loving and kind human I have ever met, and I am so happy you’re my mom. I love you more than anything, and hope this helps you realize how important you are.
All my love in the whole world,
Claire (your favorite daughter)
The part in parentheses is how she and I refer to her. She’s the only daughter, so we can get away with that title.
We have all worked so hard to build this family bigger, better, stronger (kind of like the bionic woman), and I couldn’t be more proud of what we have achieved. I know we still have work to do, so there’s no resting on our laurels. In the future, we’ll be incorporating in-laws and grandchildren, but for now I’ll bask in the glow of being an active participant in building something pretty darn special.
